## Commentary

Isaac Blessing Jacob 1640s Oil on canvas, 131 x 178 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg This canvas is regarded as one of the finest paintings of this undeservedly forgotten artist, whose works have frequently been ascribed to other masters. In the eighteenth century the present painting was variously attributed to Jusepe de Ribera, Bernardo Strozzi, and Matthias Stomer.
