# Portrait of a Gentleman [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [LOTTO, Lorenzo]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Oil on canvas, 118 x 105 cm ## Commentary Portrait of a Gentleman c. 1535 Oil on canvas, 118 x 105 cm Galleria Borghese, Rome The melancholy Portrait of a Man by Lorenzo Lotto is probably the portrait of the widower, Mercurio Bua, because of the small skull surrounded by rose petals, reminiscent of a fatal confinement.
