## Commentary

Steinfeld &#34;discovered&#34; Lake Hallstatt as the classical pictorial motif of the Salzkammergut landscape, and numerous artists subsequently painted many different versions of it. His first depiction of a view of Hallstatt in 1824, was followed by a series of variations.
