## Commentary

Nearly 150 maps of Paris were published in the eighteenth century. The most famous and most pleasant to use is the one prepared by Louis Bretez in 1734-38 for Michel-Étienne Turgot, provost of the merchants of Paris, with its convenient, if somewhat artificial, bird's-eye views. The so-called Turgot map documents urban expansion to the north and east.
