## Commentary

Ognissanti Madonna \(detail\) c. 1310 Tempera on wood Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence In an incomparable fashion Giotto uses the most delicate style of painting to achieve a great closeness to nature of appearance. We believe we can feel the delicacy of the see-through material over the Virgins head, just as we can see her breast, even down to the nipple, through the softly flowing fabric other robe. This utmost naturalness of the maternal and the feminine heightens the sublimity other gaze precisely by way of contrast.
