# Roger Frugard: Chirurgia [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, French]() - Date: 1301-1350 - Technique: Manuscript \(MS Sloane 1977\), 235 x 160 mm \(each\) ## Commentary Rogerius \(c. 1140–c. 1195\), also called Rogerius Salernitanus, Roger Frugard, was a Salernitan surgeon who wrote a work on medicine entitled Practica Chirurgiae \("The Practice of Surgery"\) around 1180. It is also called Chirurgiae Magistri Rogerii \("The Surgery of Master Rogerius"\). Rogerius's work was kept relevant by the new edition \(1250\) made by his pupil Rolando de Parma, a professor at Bologna. From the 10th century, the leading medical school was at Salerno, Italy. The present early 14th-century French manuscript contains the Chirurgia Folios 1-46\), illustrated with full-page miniatures in three registers in colours and with some gold backgrounds. The picture presented here shows folios 7v-8. In the upper registers are scenes from the life of Christ, including the Deposition, the Burial, and the Harrowing of Hell.
