## Commentary

Study after Michelangelo's St Matthew c. 1507 Pen and ink, 319 x 230 mm British Museum, London In Florence, Raphael had an early acquaintance with Michelangelo, and with the older master's work in progress. Although Michelangelo was secretive about his work, some of Raphael's extant drawings show that he was given access to unfinished projects such as the Cascina cartoon and the unfinished sculpture of St Matthew. From the start Raphael valued Michelangelo's art and studied it closely. At least three sketches that he made of Michelangelo's David survive, as well as sketches after the Taddei Tondo, and the Bruges Madonna.
