## Commentary

During the reign of Louis XIII, fashion, especially male dresses, played a very important role. This is reflected in both contemporary paintings and engravings. Fine apparels, the great luxury of the aristocracy throughout the ancien régime, underwent constant permutations. Chronicles provide useful help in appreciating the significance and intentions behind such portraits as Jean de Saint-Igny's figures with large lace collars.
