## Commentary

Van Wittel, a Dutch painter, was one of the founders of the &#39;veduta&#39; tradition \(paintings of townscapes, sometimes imaginary\). Apart from the vedute of Rome, which was the largest part of his work, Van Wittel also painted views of Naples and Venice, where he settled in 1697.
