## Commentary

Paris exercised its power of attraction on cosmopolitan artists, including the Swedish painter Alexander Roslin, who was received by the academy in 1753 and admired for his portraits of intellectuals and artists. Jean-François Marmontel \(1723-1799\) was a French historian and writer, a member of the Encyclopediste movement.
