## Commentary

In contrast to the many seventeenth-century representations of the prodigal son returning to his father&#39;s house to seek redemption for his sins, Hieronymus Janssens depicts him dining with a music-making party. Here we are offered a glimpse of his lavish lifestyle before falling into penury.
