## Commentary

The picture shows a view of the library of the former Olivetan monastery San Michele in Bosco \(now the Istituto Rizzoli\). Canuti&#39;s last important fresco cycle in the library was commissioned by Taddeo Pepoli, and painted together with the architecture painter Enrico Haffner. With that cycle, whose encyclopedic and ingenious program was presumably of his own devising, Pepoli created a kind of monument to himself.
