## Commentary

This painting is one of the pinnacle panels of the now dismembered altarpiece painted by Ugolino di Nerio for the Franciscan church of Santa Croce, Florence. According to a nineteenth-century &lt;a onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/h/humbert/ugolino.html&#39;\)&#34; href=&#34;/html/h/humbert/ugolino.html&#34;&gt;drawing attributed to Humbert de Superville,&lt;/a&gt; it was placed above the paired Sts Bartholomew and Andrew \(National Gallery, London\). King David, wearing a crown and an ermine-lined robe, holds a scroll in one hand and with the other makes a rhetoric gesture. The letters on the scroll presumably once read as a quotation from a Psalm.
