## Commentary

This painting comes from a set of small copper panels depicting insects. Many of these panels are purely studies of insects, but these are sometimes combined with a branch of fruit or flowers, or studies of shells. The present panel depicts garden and house spiders with grass snakes and caterpillars contorted and entwined to spell the artist&#39;s name \(with a variety of grass snakes and caterpillars: JoAn vAn/ Kessel\). It is unquestionably the most innovative of the panels.
