# Tomb of Lanfranco Settala [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [GIOVANNI DI BALDUCCIO]() - Date: 1301-1350 - Technique: Marble ## Commentary This tomb commemorates Lanfranco Settala, General of the Augustinian Order and founder of the church, who died in 1264. His genial effigy is carved on the tomb, seated in his preceptor's chair, with his devout and diminutive pupils around him. The tomb is located in the north transept among several sarcophagi from the mid-14th century, all from the school of Giovanni di Balduccio. The upper part of the sarcophagus is characterized by the presence of the deceased, lying on a parade bed, watched over at the ends by two figures of deacons with their hands crossed on their chests, while two other characters hold up his funeral curtain. On the front of the, on the other hand, he is represented in the chair, in front of a crowd of attentive lay and ecclesiastical listeners, with two niches on the sides inside which St Agnes \(left\) is depicted, with the traditional attribute of lamb in her arms, and St Catherine of Alexandra \(right\), holding a book and the palm of martyrdom in her hands, while the attribute of the toothed wheel appears on the ground.
