# Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Paper mounted on canvas, 160 x 280 cm ## Commentary Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons c. 1543 Paper mounted on canvas, 160 x 280 cm Royal College of Surgeons of England, London In order to preserve a second version of the painting of Henry VIII with the barber surgeons, Holbein's cartoon, which he drew as a preparation for the panel painting, was completely painted over with oil paints at an unknown date. The anonymous artist undertook major changes compared with the original composition by inserting a window on the right instead of the original inscription panel.
