## Commentary

Très Petites Heurs d'Anne de Bretagne c. 1498 Manuscript \(Ms. nouv. acq. lat. 3120\), 66 x 46 mm \(each\) Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris Anne of Brittany \(Anne de Bretagne, 1477-1514\) was the last independent Breton ruler, who became queen to two successive French kings, Charles VIII and Louis XII. In all, four Books of Hours from her possessions have survived: two miniature editions, one of middle-size format and a codex of extraordinary size and weight, destined for use in a chapel rather than in a private room. When she died in 1514, she was praised for her patronage of the arts and her predilection for luxury. Particularly the Grandes Heurs confirm this reputation. The two miniature editions, the Très Petites Heurs d'Anne de Bretagne were used for her travels and for private daily use. The copy in Paris was finished some years before the Grandes Heurs, and it is among the smallest books of hours that have come down to us. \(The other copy is in the Morgan Library and Museum in New York.\) In this tiny manuscript we also find splendid foliate borders framing the text. These framed texts face pages with miniatures ascribed to an anonymous illuminator. The main miniature on the double page \(folios 87v and 88r\) shows King David in Prayer, above him a red, infernal angel. In the picture below David the shepherd boy kills the giant Goliath with a stone from his sling.
