## Commentary

The formal characteristics of Heintz&#39;s art are all present in this imaginary scene, even if the subject is somewhat exceptional for him. It represents neither a recognizable site in Venice nor a festivity. In what may perhaps be the first Venetian veduta ideata, Heintz grouped those monuments considered most characteristic of Venice in his time round a square vaguely reminiscent of the Piazzetta. Together with three other paintings the present canvas adorns the portego of the secondo piano nobile of Palazzo Albrizzi, where all four works are surrounded by an elegant eighteenth-century stucco framework.
