## Commentary

The closer Cézanne came to a comprehension of nature, the less satisfied he was with himself. It was long ago conjectured that the repaired hole in the centre of this canvas was made by the artist in an outburst of fury. Such an act might demonstrate how exceptionally demanding he was toward himself.
