# Interior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, Spanish]() - Date: 1201-1250 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary Gothic cathedrals after models of the modern French episcopal churches were constructed in Spain after the 1220s. At Burgos the foundation stone for a new church was laid in 1221. The choir of this church could already be used by 1230. Work continued off and on until 1567. Burgos Cathedral was based on the model of Bourges in France, however, it is not a copy, since it has only single side aisles and for that reason it was not possible to repeat the sequence of two side aisles increasing in height toward the nave, a feature characteristic for Bourges.
