## Commentary

Portrait of François Langlois c. 1621 Oil on canvas, 80 x 67 cm Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley The painting is called &#39;The Bagpipe Player.&#39; The sitter of this genre-like portrait is the French engraver and art dealer François Langlois \(1588-1647\), a friend of the painter. The artist and the sitter were both in Rome in 1621, and it is likely that the portrait was executed that time. Langlois, dressed in a vivid red, plumed beret, looks toward the viewer with a puzzled smile as he plays on a type of bagpipe known as a sordellina.
