# Book of Hours of Catherine of Cleves [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, Netherlandish]() - Date: 1401-1450 - Technique: Manuscript \(M. 917 and 945\) ## Commentary Book of Hours of Catherine of Cleves 1434-40 Manuscript \(M. 917 and 945\) The Morgan Library and Museum, New York The miniature on folio 168v in the section of the Office of the Dead. It shows the mouth of the Hell, a horrific combination of monster, cauldron and infernal city. In origin, this probably goes back to St John's apocalyptic visions and their imagery of the New Jerusalem.
