## Commentary

This painting commemorates the sea battle of Lepanto \(1571\) and the military successes of the Venetian captain general Sebastiano Venier, who was elected Doge in June 1577 and died only a year later. Unlike the modello \(British Museum, London\), which still shows the Doge being crowned by Venetia, the final version - presumably dating from post-1581 - emphasizes his role as the defender of Christian faith in the service of the state.
