# Annunciation [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [LORENZETTI, Ambrogio]() - Date: 1301-1350 - Technique: Tempera on wood, 127 x 120 cm ## Commentary In this late and highly finished work Ambrogio abandons his usual earthy depiction of realistic and human detail in favour of emphasizing the almost Gothic elegance of the two characters. They face each other across a floor that is, however, painted in rigorous perspective. The work exhibits a spatial sophistication: almost all the orthogonals of the tile floor run roughly to a single vanishing point. This feature of the Annunciation testifies to the artist's preoccupation with the problem of rationalizing pictorial space.
