# Ewer and basin [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [VIANEN, Adam van]() - Date: 1601-1650 - Technique: Silver-gilt, ewer height 38,5 cm, basin diameter 52,5 cm ## Commentary This ensemble, commissioned by the city of Amsterdam in 1614, was a gift for the stadholder Prince Maurits, as suggested by the oranges - symbols of the House of Orange - along the rim and in the centre of the basin. The scenes on the ewer and basin portray military victories that took place under Maurits's rule during the Eighty Years' War.
