# Study of a Male Nude \(recto\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MICHELANGELO Buonarroti]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Black chalk on brown paper, 242 x 182 mm ## Commentary The male nude on the recto of the present sheet is related to the figure of St Lawrence seen enthroned on a cloud beneath the Virgin Mary in the Last Judgment. In this late design phase Michelangelo concentrated solely on the clarification of those parts visible in the fresco. At the bottom left of the sheet Michelangelo drew the head of the saint which was only cursorily outlined on the nude figure above. The small circles in the area of the forehead, nose, and mouth mark the parts that were to receive the strongest white heightening in the fresco.
