## Commentary

The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar set up a golden image and ordered the Jews in exile to worship it. Three young men refused to kneel and the king had them cast into the fire. But they were protected by their God and survived the flames. Pieter Pietersz was the son of Pieter Aertsen. He built on the work of his father, and like him he could lose himself in compositions of great complexity.
