## Commentary

After he had moved to Hiva Oa in 1901, Gauguin returned to the theme of horse and rider, in two works that are clearly influenced by the Parisian racing scenes of Degas. Due to the two riders in profile moving parallel to the horizon and blocking the movement of the other riders, the paintings are somewhat mysterious.
