## Commentary

A Teacher and his Pupil c. 1670 Oil on canvas, 135 x 111 cm Musée du Louvre, Paris Lefebvre's surviving works are all attributions. The portraits associated with his name have the softness of those of Bourdon combined with the stronger realism of Philippe de Champaigne. This picture shows an unusual double portrait, on account of the obvious intimacy between master and pupil. This picture seems to be a fragment of a larger composition. Despite the traditional attribution, it might be a Flemish or Dutch work.
