# The Egmond Tympanum

## Commentary

This tympanum came from the Benedictine abbey of Sts Peter and Adalbert at Egmond-Binnen where it served as a relief over the main portal of the former church. It was once a trapeziform lid of a sarcophagus that a stonemason refashioned into a tympanum. The relief represents St Peter in the middle with a huge key and the crosier. He is flanked by Petronella, Countess of Holland, and her son, the later Count Dirk VI, for whom she acted as regent after the death of count Floris II in 1121.
