## Commentary

ALEKSEYEV, Fyodor Yakovlevich \(b. ca. 1753, St. Petersburg, d. 1824, St. Petersburg\) View of St. Petersburg c. 1795 Oil on canvas, 62 x 101 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Alekseyev&#39;s contemporaries often called him the Russian Canaletto, in recognition of his masterful vedute. The present painting depicts a view of the Bourse and Admiralty from the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg.
