## Commentary

This engraving is the title page of a series of thirty-two plates. The title is written on a classical monument at centre, flanked by two female figures holding a crown. The series with the title 'Triomphes de l'Eglise Militante', representing Christian martyrs under the reigns of several Roman emperors, was published by Jean Leclerc in Paris. It was a reworking in laterally reversed format of a 1585 Jesuit publication, which comprised 32 prints engraved by Giovanni Battista de' Cavalieri depicting in graphic detail the martyrdoms of various saints.
