# Il Gesù: Façade [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [PORTA, Giacomo della]() - Date: 1551-1600 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary Work on the Jesuits' church in Rome, the Gesù, was begun in 1568 from <a href="\#" onClick="w=window.open \('/support/plans/p/porta\_g/gesu1.html', 'newWin', 'scrollbars=yes,status=no,dependent=yes,screenX=0,screenY=0,width=400,height=600'\);w.opener=this;w.focus\(\);return false">plans by Vignola,</a> but Giacomo della Porta's design for the façade from 1571 moved in a different stylistic direction. His frontage, with its aediculas, is a classic example of the Counter-Reformation church façade, with broad nave and flanking side chapels.
