# Countryside Inn with Revellers [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [TENIERS, David the Younger]() - Date: 1651-1700 - Technique: Oil on canvas, 55 x 85 cm ## Commentary The picture shows a countryside inn with revellers enjoying an afternoon's drinking, the innkeeper chopping wood in the foreground, and a pastoral landscape beyond. Teniers delighted in the portrayal of peasant revelry for the scope of characterisation and gesture that it afforded him. Drink is always present in his peasant scenes, and usually the cause of the subject at hand. It is noteworthy that the figures in the present image are larger than usual. The painting, which formerly belonged to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, is signed and dated on a rock lower centre left: D.TENIERS.
