## Commentary

The work of Jacob van Strij, along with that of his brother Abraham, was firmly rooted in the traditions of Dutch seventeenth-century painting, particularly those artists associated with their native Dordrecht, most notably Aelbert Cuyp. Many of van Strij&#39;s work are closely related to Cuyp&#39;s, to the extent that attribution has often been confused, and in fact contemporary accounts suggest that van Strij actually produced some deceptive imitations.
