## Commentary

VALCKERT, Werner Jacobsz. van den \(b. ca. 1580, Den Haag, d. ca. 1627, Amsterdam\) A Man Cutting Tobacco - Oil on oak panel, 67 x 52 cm Private collection The painting represents an interior with a man wearing a fur hat and cutting tobacco, a lady handing him a pipe. The woman wears an oorijzer, or &#39;ear iron&#39;, the metal structure used to support a bonnet. Almost all contemporary depictions show oorijzers worn in conjunction with a bonnet, the present picture is highly unusual in showing the oorijzer worn without a bonnet.
