## Commentary

The great staircase or Escalier des Ambassadeurs in the palace of Versailles was designed by Louis Le Vau \(1612-1670\) but was only begun in 1671, the year after his death. The rooms in which the festivities of the Court took place were approached by this spectacular staircase.
