## Commentary

Man of Sorrows \(left wing\) c. 1457 Distemper on wood, 31 x 23 cm Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg This panel is the left wing of a diptych, which is called Löwenstein diptych after the donor portrayed on the right wing. Christ is depicted as the Man of Sorrows. His naturalistic figure is placed at half-length like a portrait against a flat background of gold.
