## Commentary

Two stags at bay, chased by hunters and dogs. Stag hunting was a popular subject in 16th-century Flemish art. The low horizon, the ample trees, the vistas and the choice of colours all indicate Flemish influence. Yet Bleker lived and worked in Haarlem.
