# Virgin and Child [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [PISANO, Nino]() - Date: 1351-1400 - Technique: White marble, pigment, gold leaf, height 76 cm \(without pedestal\) ## Commentary The son of the great fourteenth-century sculptor Andrea Pisano, Nino became an accomplished artist in his own right. Nino was receptive to new influences, particularly from France, as seen in the lyrical drapery patterns and sweet expressions of this Virgin and Child. The Virgin is depicted here as an elegant and courtly lady, a more human interpretation of the Madonna consistent with developments in spirituality in the fourteenth century. In the Virgin and Child of c. 1347-48, his first signed work, in Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Nino solved the problem of composing a figure in the round, avoiding a break in the axis of the figure by the use of a single, unified S-curve.
