## Commentary

Haggadah for Passover \(the 'Sister Haggadah'\) 1325-75 Manuscript \(Ms. Oriental 2884\), 230 x 190 mm British Library, London This Hebrew manuscript was written in Hebrew, Sephardi square script. It has 64 folios decorated with 34 full-page miniatures, 11 textual illustrations, numerous decorated initials and marginal decorations. It is called 'Sister Haggadah' referring to the fact that it is very similar to the '<a onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/zgothic/miniatur/1301-350/4other/17\_1301.html'\)" href="/html/zgothic/miniatur/1301-350/4other/17\_1301.html">Golden Haggadah</a>' in the British Library. The Haggadah is a Jewish text that sets forth the order of the Passover Seder. The full-page miniature on folio 17v depicts the service in the synagogue. A bearded man, probably the hazan \(cantor\) stands on the bimah \(a platform in the synagogue from which the Torah is read\), surrounded by the congregation. The position of the Jews in medieval Europe was full of anomalies. Officially they were tolerated by both Church and state and allowed to practice their religion. In several countries they contributed notably to national culture. But as non-Christians the Jews could never become integrated into their host society and this was also their own choice.
