## Commentary

A plaster model of Vulcan he exhibited in 1741 served for his morceau de reception in marble the following year, and he thus entered the Academic while his father was still alive. The Vulcan might indeed be mistaken for the elder Guillaume's work, so completely is its idiom his vigorous 'engaged' Baroque. The statue was inspired by Van Clève's Polyphemus, executed more than half a century earlier.
