# Milky Way [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HANSEN, Frida]() - Date: 1851-1900 - Technique: Cotton \(warp\), sheep wool \(weft\), 260 x 345 cm ## Commentary Frida Hansen, the internationally-acclaimed artist from Stavanger, pioneered in the development of Norwegian textile art. Today she is considered one of Norway's foremost artists and representatives of Art Nouveau and Symbolism. Hansen made her international breakthrough in 1900 when she exhibited the tapestry Milky Way \(1898\) at the World's Fair in Paris and won a gold medal. Frida Hansen took traditional Norwegian weaving as her starting point but was international in her style. Much can be traced to Japanese influence, and her figural style also reveals links with the Glasgow group of artists. The Milky Way depicts a biblical subject and employs a "transparent weaving" technique which lends the pale figures and the veil a transparent, floating effect. The tapestry is signed, woven in light blue lower right: FRIDA HANSEN.
