## Commentary

In the 1640s, the Lombard tradition of the unadorned rendering of painstakingly observed facts was kept alive in Bergamo rather than Milan. These qualities are apparentin Carlo Ceresa&#39;s portraits, painted in an austere &#39;Spanish taste.&#39;
