## Commentary

The building of the cathedral was begun in 1130 with the erection of the nave. It superseded a church constructed in the early Middle Ages. It is a mixture of styles. On the one hand it draws on Norman models, but on the other hand it is one of the first examples of a typical Gothic elevation, that is, it has four storeys. Since Suger&#39;s choir in Saint-Denis, the early Gothic idea had been exclusively four-storey elevation. The photo shows the nave and group of east towers.
