# St Gilles and the Hind \(detail\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MASTER of Saint Gilles]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Oil and egg tempera on oak ## Commentary St Gilles and the Hind \(detail\) c. 1500 Oil and egg tempera on oak National Gallery, London According to the legend the king of the Visigoths was hunting in the forest and happened to give chase to the tame hind of the saint living as a hermit there. The animal ran for protection to St Gilles and the arrow of one of the archers, aimed at the animal, accidentally hit the hermit in the right hand.
