## Commentary

One of the many aisle-less churches in Provence belongs to the former monastery of Notre-Dae in Montmajour. The foundation crypt was built on the rockface of the Mons Majour. \(It could be reached only by boat until the marshes were drained.\) The crypt was consecrated together with the east sections of the upper church \(choir and transept\) in 1153. The building of the nave began around 1160, and only two of the five planned bays were built. The cloister dates from the last quarter of the twelfth century. The photo shows a view of the whole site.
