## Commentary

Italian Landscape with Ruined Tower c. 1640 Oil on canvas, 76 x 98 cm Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna This landscape, one of the few surviving paintings that Jan Both created in Rome, was painted in the style of Claude Lorrain. Jan Both collaborated with Claude in Rome on a major project for the Spanish King Philip IV, who commissioned twenty-two large landscape paintings to embellish his hunting lodge Buen Retiro in Madrid.
