## Commentary

This monumental and exuberantly decorated ewer and basin were probably presented by the States of Holland to Maarten Harpertsz Tromp \(1598-1653\) in gratitude for his role in the capture of Dunkirk in 1646. The size of the pieces gave Lutma the opportunity to use his speciality, auricular ornamentation, in its most luxuriant form.
