## Commentary

Hendrick Frans Verbruggen drew a number of designs for town and country houses for wealthy burghers. These houses display the same Late Baroque virtuosity as his monumental sculpture. The artist methodically followed the contemporary French line: the familiarity with Versailles is easy to perceive in his articulation of the façade, roof structure and symmetrical balance between receding and projecting architectural components. The monumental east front of the Mercator-Ortelius house, shown in the photo, is ascribed to Verbruggen.
